How to use the futures calculator
- Pick the contract, for example NQ or its micro, MNQ.
- Enter the move in points, in ticks, or as entry and exit prices, choose long or short and the number of contracts.
- Add fees if you want the net result: the round-turn commission and exchange fees per contract from your platform.
- Optionally enter your prop firm account's drawdown and profit target to see how big the trade is relative to them.
How futures profit is calculated
Every futures contract has a fixed dollar value per point, set by the exchange. Profit or loss is:
P&L = Points moved × Point value × Contracts − Fees
Or in ticks: ticks moved × tick value × contracts. A tick is the smallest step a contract can move, and the tick value is the tick size times the point value. For the E-mini S&P 500, a tick is 0.25 points, so it is worth 0.25 × $50 = $12.50.
Example: you buy 2 NQ at 20,000 and sell at 20,010. That is 10 points, or 40 ticks, and 10 × $20 × 2 = $400 before fees.
Futures tick and point values
The tick and point values of the contracts most traded at futures prop firms, from each contract's CME Group specs (checked October 25, 2026):
| Symbol | Contract | Tick size | Tick value | Point value | 10-point move |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ES | E-mini S&P 500 | 0.25 | $12.50 | $50 | $500 |
| MES | Micro E-mini S&P 500 | 0.25 | $1.25 | $5 | $50 |
| NQ | E-mini Nasdaq-100 | 0.25 | $5 | $20 | $200 |
| MNQ | Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 | 0.25 | $0.50 | $2 | $20 |
| YM | E-mini Dow | 1 | $5 | $5 | $50 |
| MYM | Micro E-mini Dow | 1 | $0.50 | $0.50 | $5 |
| RTY | E-mini Russell 2000 | 0.1 | $5 | $50 | $500 |
| M2K | Micro E-mini Russell 2000 | 0.1 | $0.50 | $5 | $50 |
| CL | Crude Oil (WTI) | 0.01 | $10 | $1,000 | $10,000 |
| MCL | Micro WTI Crude Oil | 0.01 | $1 | $100 | $1,000 |
| NG | Henry Hub Natural Gas | 0.001 | $10 | $10,000 | $100,000 |
| GC | Gold | 0.1 | $10 | $100 | $1,000 |
| MGC | Micro Gold | 0.1 | $1 | $10 | $100 |
| SI | Silver | 0.005 | $25 | $5,000 | $50,000 |
For energy and metals a "point" is a 1.00 move in the price: one dollar per barrel for crude oil, one dollar per ounce for gold and silver, one dollar per MMBtu for natural gas.
NQ and MNQ point value
One NQ point is worth $20 and one tick $5. One MNQ point is worth $2 and one tick $0.50. So 10 points is $200 on NQ and $20 on MNQ, per contract.
ES and MES point value
One ES point is worth $50 and one tick $12.50; one MES point is worth $5 and one tick $1.25.
Gold futures tick value
Gold (GC) moves in 0.1 ticks worth $10, so a one-dollar move is $100. Micro Gold (MGC) is one tenth of that: $1 a tick and $10 a dollar.
Mini vs micro futures
Micro E-mini contracts (MES, MNQ, MYM, M2K) and the micro energy and metals contracts (MCL, MGC) are one tenth of the full-size contract, with the same tick size. That makes them the easiest way to size down: if one NQ risks too much of your drawdown, three to five MNQ might fit. Most prop firms count 10 micros as one mini against their contract limit.
What a move means for a prop firm account
On a typical 50K futures evaluation, the maximum drawdown is $2,000 and the profit target $3,000. A 10-point NQ move against you with 2 contracts costs $400, or 20% of your drawdown; the same move in your favor is 13% of the target. The calculator shows these shares so you can judge a trade before you take it. To size trades from your drawdown, use our futures position size calculator, and read how trailing drawdown works.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate futures profit?+
Multiply the price move in points by the contract's point value and by the number of contracts, then subtract fees. For example, a 10-point move on 2 NQ contracts is 10 × $20 × 2 = $400. You can also count ticks: ticks × tick value × contracts.
What is the MNQ point value?+
One point on the Micro E-mini Nasdaq-100 (MNQ) is worth $2 per contract, and one tick (0.25 points) is worth $0.50. That is one tenth of the full-size NQ, where a point is worth $20.
How much is 10 points on NQ?+
$200 per contract: 10 points × $20. On the micro, MNQ, 10 points is $20 per contract.
How much is one micro NQ contract worth?+
An MNQ contract's value is the Nasdaq-100 futures price × $2. At an index level of 20,000, for example, one MNQ controls $40,000 and one NQ $400,000. At a prop firm you don't put up that money or margin; what matters is how much each point moves your account: $2 per point on MNQ.
What is the gold futures tick value?+
Gold futures (GC) move in ticks of $0.10 per troy ounce, worth $10.00 per contract, so one dollar of movement is $100. Micro Gold (MGC) ticks are worth $1.00, and one dollar of movement is $10.
What is the difference between a tick and a point?+
A tick is the smallest price step a contract can move; a point is a 1.0 move in its price. ES, NQ and their micros have 4 ticks per point, while YM moves in whole points, so a tick and a point are the same.
